Program has inspired a love for reading in children across the United States.  This year, the program will reach 14 million kids in 620,000 classrooms nationwide.

Since the BOOK IT! Program’s inception in 1984, its mission has been simple: encourage children to read.

The program, which runs from October through March, allows teachers to set reading goals for their students each month. Students who meet their monthly goal are rewarded with a certificate for a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza and Reading Journal from Pizza Hut. The program prides itself on being simple, flexible and fun. Best of all, enrollment in the BOOK IT! Program is free.

BOOK IT! is entering its second year partnering with award-winning children’s author Kate DiCamillo.   DiCamillo uses her platform as a world-renowned writer to encourage children to find the joy in reading.

Pizza Hut corporate created the ‘Green Team’ earlier this year in an effort to create more sustainable office processes. The team has addressed several projects to implement sustainable practices at the Restaurant Support Center (RSC) this year including a waste audit, Earth Day events such as the Go Dark Hour where all lights in the RSC were turned down to conserve energy, education and awareness, and careful resource management in our headquarters.

As a result of the team’s efforts this year Pizza Hut Corporate was recently awarded the Environmental Star of Excellence Award by the City of Plano, TX. The team was recognized with the Environmental Commitment award in the business category. The Environmental Commitment category recognizes a company’s commitment to implementing an environmental initiative that goes beyond impacting its immediate organization.

Throughout the year the Green Team encouraged Pizza Hut employees to take sustainability knowledge home with them. As a company, they participated in the Great American Cleanup in Plano, donated pizzas to local food bank Metro Relief, among other initiatives. The Green Team’s impact has gone far beyond the walls of Pizza Hut’s corporate office.

The City of Plano, TX recently earned a 4-STAR rating for national leadership in sustainability by the STAR Community Rating System. It’s just the second city in Texas to earn 4 stars. While Pizza Hut is a global brand, it is important to drive impact in our local communities.

Pizza Hut’s BOOK IT!, the longest-running children’s literacy program in the U.S., is celebrating its 30th anniversary of inspiring a love of reading among young people by giving one lucky child $30,000 towards their college education. The randomly selected winner of the BOOK IT! Giveaway was Courtney Abbott, Kindergartener from Madison, Wisconsin. Courtney reached her goal of reading 20 books a month for 6 months – reading a total of 120 books!

To celebrate the occasion, Pizza Hut of Southern Wisconsin hosted a pizza party for students at the Glenn Stephens Elementary school where they presented Courtney and her family with a check for the $30,000 College Fund.

To continue its Anniversary celebration, Pizza Hut named Restaurant General Manager (RGM) Kristy Monahan Smith of Carrollton, Missouri the Connect with Effect: BOOK IT! Champion. This award recognizes and celebrates the Pizza Hut RGM who consistently goes above and beyond in their commitment to the BOOK IT! Program. This individual is a role model in his or her restaurant and community for actively recognizing students for meeting reading goals, partnering with schools to support reading and other school-related initiatives. This RGM is someone who we believe sets the standard for celebrating reading with flavorful moments at Pizza Hut! Congratulations to Kristy on the recognition for being a true BOOK IT! Champion!

Congratulations to team Cambiando Hambre Por Esparanza, the 2014 Yum! Brands Volunteer for Hope Platinum Huge Heart Champion! This project was led by Honduras franchise partner, Comidas Especializadas from KFC and Pizza Hut, and included more than 500 team members and volunteers partnering with Vision Mundial to feed hungry children in the community and increase the rate of families participating in local feeding and nutrition programs. The team was awarded with a $25,000 grant to benefit Vision Mundial for making a lasting impact by helping to reduce the number of children suffering from malnutrition in the community.

Comidas and local food donors have been supporting Consonlaca since 2012, and have made five food donations totaling more than $70,000. Volunteers have spent 2,600 hours per year supporting this project, which includes a seven hour drive from the storage facility to the remote community of just 600 residents. Additionally, employees from Comidas in partnership with the World Food Programme have raised more than US $200,000 in donations for World Hunger Relief 2014 from customers at KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants as well as community patrons.

While Comidas has made a significant improvement to this community, getting support was not always easy. The group’s initial food collection did not have the necessary impact, so team members were taken to see the living conditions in Consonlaca. The reports of that team’s experience inspired additional collections and now the team is making two food donation deliveries per year with the hopes of achieving three per year in 2015.

Consonlaca has been declared a model community for the fight against hunger in Honduras, with child malnutrition falling from 20 children in 2013 to just two in 2014. The $25,000 grant will be awarded to Vision Mundial to continue their support of Consonlaca residents.

“We thank you. We really need it because we are families with limited resources, so it is very useful for the children,” said a Consonlaca beneficiary.

Cast iron star-burst chandeliers. Mosaic, light-wood tables. Rustic grasses arranged amidst artisan olive oil bottles. No, we’re not describing your favorite coffee bar: it’s the new Super Delco Pizza Hut that recently opened in Hong Kong. Designed to create a relaxing and intimate ambiance, the new Super Delco offers a flavorful oasis from the hectic lifestyle of millennials living in Hong Kong.

The Pizza Hut Super Delco is a delivery based eat-in store model that features smaller scale fast casual or a convenient eat-in area with seating for 30-50 customers. This type of store model is typically located in more high traffic and dense residential areas.

Opening the Super Delco is the latest milestone toward accomplishing Pizza Hut’s goal of becoming the most loved pizza brand in Hong Kong. It’s the latest addition to the over 100 restaurants currently open in Hong Kong, and one of the few Super Delco locations around the world.

Richard Leong, Chief Executive of Pizza Hut Hong Kong, is excited about the opportunities the Delco Model store will bring to the region. “Pizza Hut Super Delco is a new business channel that will continue to be an engine of growth for us as the Hong Kong restaurant space becomes more competitive and the neighborhood dining scene is evolving. We also need to cater to a younger millennial generation seeking for a convenient meal replacement.”

The Super Delco design was intentional as research showed that millennials in Hong Kong are looking for a relaxing place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and light meals (e.g. Panini or cake) during weekend in the neighborhood. After the store opened, interviews with new customers (many the young, hip people we were hoping for) reported that everyone has been very happy with the service, food and menu, and ambiance.

It’s not just the design of the new Super Delco that’s infused with flavor: the menu brings new flavorful experiences, offering dishes for small groups and individuals with a focus on pasta, rice and mini-pizza. Dishes that are popular among customers in the region more broadly include the Chinese New Year Pizza – Cheesy 7 Fiesta in the shape of a flower, and in Taiwan, the Pineapple Bun Stuffed Crust Pizza is a favorite.

The overwhelming amount of encouraging responses to the new store opening has given the Hong Kong Pizza Hut team confidence in this exciting new venture and they are excited to expand across Hong Kong with more Super Delcos in 2015.

The store opened mid-December, and on one day of business, rang an incredible 560 transactions, blowing away the previous record of 492 in South Africa.

PH Korea won the first “Safety & Happy Franchise Certification” in Korea in the Nation’s Restaurant and Service industry on the 28th of November. “Safety & Happy Franchise Certification” is given by Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA), the Government’s safety authority, and it is intended to recognize and certify the Company who frontiers the efforts to protect employee health and safety standards so as to minimize industrial accidents in the workplaces. The official award ceremony was held in PHK RSC office for the three PHK stores awarded with the head of KOSHA and a few government officials in attendance. This news was publicized through the Nation’s major newspapers and on-line media.

Pizza Hut Korea has been hard at work to create a safe and happy work environment. HR and Operations teams have set up the Employee Health and Safety team to enhance EHS system and process for both RSC and Stores from early this year. RGMs led this efforts in stores by educating the staffs to result in BOH improvement. Many stores revamped the 10 days motorcycle training program and implemented ‘Good Driving Mileage Program’ that was designed by HR earlier this year to protect delivery server’s safety. This award will become more meaningful when PHK standards will be reflected to the official manual to be distributed by KOSHA in future.

Pizza Hut US is about to get a brand new flavor – dozens of them, actually – as part of its top-to-bottom brand relaunch Nov. 19.Starting then, customers will experience a range of toppings, crusts and sauces unlike anything Pizza Hut has offered to date. A few of the new options getting the biggest buzz? Pretzel Piggy, a bacon, mushroom and spinach delight served on a pretzel crust with a balsamic sauce drizzle.

Then there’s the Cock-a-Doodle Bacon, with creamy garlic Parmesan sauce, grilled chicken, bacon and diced Roma tomatoes.

And beyond new signature pizzas, customers have more toppings to choose from when ordering a custom pie, as well as six bold sauces, eight crust varieties and four sauce drizzles.

Both appear in Interbrand’s newly released 2014 rankings of the Best Global Brands. The ranking methodology includes factors such as demonstrated ability to deliver on customer expectations and drive economic value.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is getting a wingman on wheels in October. Pizza Hut is taking wings to the streets with its first food truck, the WingStreet Wagon.

A wingman is typically a friend who helps someone find a date. Although the WingStreet Wagon team cannot help customers in dating, they can assist them in dining.

The truck’s menu will include traditional and bone-out wings in eight sauces, waffle fries and Pepsi products. It will offer additional flavors based on the seasons and special events.

The vehicle’s edgy design, which includes the clever one-liners, “A Good Wingman Always Delivers” and “Bold to the Bone,” was the brainchild of the brand’s creative agency partner TracyLocke.

“It really embodies the bold personality that WingStreet is targeting,” said Billy Thomas, Associate Brand Manager, Pizza Hut.

The WingStreet Wagon plans to visit community events, breweries and area college campuses. In addition to wings and waffle fries, the food truck will eventually offer cheese sticks, apple pie and more.
