KFC India has turned a challenge from non-profit organization 17000 ft Foundation into reality, building playgrounds and libraries for children in the remote village of Ladakh.

A team from KFC travelled to Kahltse where they helped set up the playground and library at the Jamyang Khalstse Lamdon School. The team also joined the local community Sept. 12th for an event to dedicate the libraries and playgrounds to the Ladakhi children.

The initiative, which grew out of the brand’s #KFCWishBucket campaign, encouraged fan participation on social channels, resulting in:

  • 8.2 million impressions in India
  • 18.8 million global impressions
  • 15,000 individual tweets

During the 2015 College Students’ Favorite Brands selection organized by China Business Journal, KFC was named College Students’ Favorite Chain Restaurant Brand. This result offers a useful insight into the consumption patterns and mentality of China’s young generation.

This recognition comes as a result of the wide range of new measures adopted by KFC. KFC has always dedicated itself to developing new products. The new spring menu of 2015 included pulled pork burger, half-chicken and half-shrimp burger, KFC iced tea, and other delicious items. It was soon followed by the introduction of a substantial burger featuring black or pink buns, fully meeting young people’s psychological need for new experience.

In terms of marketing, KFC leverages multiple media formats favored by young consumers, such as Weibo, WeChat and brand App, for varied, fun communication. From time to time, it also launches various interactive activities, such as panini pre-release tasting and the 520 “show love and get 2 ice cream cones” giveaway, both entertaining ways of delivering real surprise and value to young consumers.

Moreover, digital services offered at KFC restaurants have all been embraced by the public. In July, KFC worked with Alipay to support mobile payment through QR scanning, thus providing young people with more convenient and trendier mobile payment experience. In September, there were a crossover collaboration between KFC and League-Legends. LoL meals were launched and a number of KFC restaurants were decked out in the LoL theme, attracting an unprecedented number of students. The meals were sold out within eight short days, setting a sales record. It is reported that over 2200 KFC restaurants across the country now offering free wifi; KFC is also the first chain restaurant to offer a mobile payment card. Electronic menu and self-ordering service are also being piloted.

On top of its efforts in products and services, KFC has always been committed to supporting impoverished college students. KFC’s First Light Foundation, which is more than a decade old, is the largest and longest-running foundation supporting impoverished college students and offers the highest amount sponsorship per project, an initiative of the China Youth Development Foundation. This foundation has also served to strengthen the emotional bond between the brand and college students.

In the era of digital technology for all, whoever wins over young people wins the competition. Thanks to its delicious food, fast service and convenience that is readily accessible everywhere, KFC has moved very close to the heart of young people, and its dazzling array of innovative experience has brought it even closer to that particular age group. As the ways in which consumers access products and services continue to evolve, how to truly understand young people’s lifestyle choices, and to provide the consumers with richer and more interesting and surprise experience are critical issues that every brand should seriously explore in order to stay relevant in the future.

KFC’s Add Hope initiative feeds more than 100,000 children in South Africa every day. This year, to drive awareness of the initiative KFC launched the brand’s first-ever Add Hope TV advertisement during World Hunger Month this October. The advertisement brings to life the difference a nutritious meal can make for a child.

Even more special, is the fact that the creative direction for the commercial was inspired by using nearly 1,000 drawings created by 250 children at Afrika Tikkun, one of Add Hope’s local beneficiaries. To learn more about Add Hope please visit: http://www.addhope.co.za.

GED Testing Service has partnered with some of the nation’s largest employers and most recognizable brands – including Walmart, KFC, Taco Bell and Southeastern Grocers – to create GEDWorksTM, a comprehensive program free for employees who want to earn their GED credential.

The GEDWorks program includes everything an employee needs to successfully prepare for and pass the GED test. Students are provided access to a GED advisor, online GED study material, connections to local adult education programs, practice tests, and more. GED advisors are a key element of GEDWorks and help guide, engage, and motivate students. GEDWorks also helps keep graduates moving forward after completing the tests by connecting them with college and career pathways tools on GED.com.

GEDWorks is one indicator that national employers understand the value of the new GED program, which is focused on better preparing learners to compete in today’s job market and to successfully enter post-secondary education programs essential to most 21st century jobs. This effort also marks the first time national employers have banded together to support a program aimed solely at decreasing the number of adults without a high school diploma, an important step in improving the country’s economic competitiveness.

“Employers have invested in this national program with GED Testing Service to boost the education levels of their employees because they recognize the benefits of the enhanced GED program and the importance of education in the lives of their employees. The program offers a cost-effective way for employers to help adult learners achieve their goals and invest in their futures. Students earning a GED credential enhance their career prospects and earning potential,” said Randy Trask, President of GED Testing Service.

The support that employers show their participating employees is another key element of the GEDWorks program.

The program is completely free for learners. It is fully funded by employers or, in the case of KFC, by the associated charity, Kentucky Fried Chicken Foundation. The only investment needed by students is time and energy to prepare for the test.

“Now that I have my GED, it takes away that little bit of shame and embarrassment [of not having graduated from high school],” said Courtney, an employee of Winn-Dixie/Southeastern Grocers in Alabama and one of the first graduates of the GEDWorks program. “My GED advisor was very encouraging and friendly throughout the process – she addressed all of the concerns I had along the way. I think others should go for it as well!”

The KFC South Africa Supply Chain team recently hosted a ‘Spin-a-thon’ fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for their Add Hope initiative, a program designed to provide opportunities to give back in partnership with KFC.

The team approached family, friends and suppliers to sponsor them for every “km traveled” or to donate a lump sum. Virgin Active, the local community gym, donated their facilities to support the event where KFC Employees challenged other functions to join them spinning on stationary bikes to Add Hope for their Community. Spirits were high during the event with over 30 participants biking for more than 5 hours resulting in 4800 km or nearly 3,000 miles distance.

The KFC South Africa team was proud to announce they raised over $3,000 USD (41,000 ZAR) during the event which they will donate to a local charity during the month of September.

KFC South Africa combined great tasting food and local talent, with a first-of-its-kind KFC SoundBite music platform expereince in the KFC Willows, Bloemfontein restaurant. This flagship restaurant is showcasing ground-breaking technology and celebrating upcoming local artists with its customers.

The one-of-a-kind music platform turns the restaurant’s regular tables into interactive audio tables that boast illustrations by local artists, creating a digital experience where customers can interact directly with the table to play various sound tracks. By placing their elbows on the table’s surface consumers will engage in an immersive musical experience through game-changing technology known as Bone Technology.

In partnership with KFC, Gloo@Ogilvy, a digital division of creative agency Ogilvy & Mather, developed the SoundBite music platform experience. “KFC has been a fantastic partner, allowing us to experiment with bold new thinking and the KFC SoundBite table is a brilliant example of how we can use technology in new innovative ways to create excitement around the brand,” said Ben Evans, National Managing Director, Digital Portfolio, Ogilvy & Mather South Africa.

The KFC SoundBite project launched in partnership with young local musical talent, such as 2Lee Stark, Ginger Breadman, Lebo Lukewarm and Priddy Ugly. Through the sound waves, consumers will hear some of the selected artists’ latest hits using the KFC SoundBite technology. Customers can also find out more about their favorite artists by simply placing their smartphones on the table.

The KFC UK Recruitment team recently visited the York Road Project homeless shelter to help prepare clients to enter the job market. The team spent several hours with the shelter’s clients hosting workshops on CV writing, interview skills, and team building. The Recruitment team spent their time teaching the homeless adults “the skills to go back out into the world and hopefully find themselves employment, on a more long term basis,” said Louise Norris, a member of the KFC UK team.

Since the KFC team visited the shelter multiple York Road clients have received job offers. In fact, two of the shelter’s clients have received offers to join KFC as full-time team members in local restaurants.

Louise Norris noted that the volunteering is a two way street. “Not only does our support provide the clients with skills – volunteering has a long term effect on us as volunteers. It has made us more open minded and aware of community issues. It has provided us with skills of dealing with a group of the community with whom we might not otherwise interact… raising their self-confidence and self-worth, which ultimately makes their chances of finding employment much better.” said Louise Norris, noting that volunteering is a two way street.

The York Road Project provides the homeless community with “emergency and longer term” accommodation. The York Road Project was formed in 2001 and has been providing lodging for those in need ever since. The organization can accommodate up to 25 persons between its main emergency accommodation property and its three move-on properties.

KFC’s Mini-Football Championship, an International soccer tournament, took place earlier this month in Moscow, Russia with over 2,000 teams and more than 15,000 players participating.

After six months of regional qualifying battles and daily trainings, teenage players ages 14-16 from all over the country came to Moscow to compete, drawing a crowd of over 25,000 fans to Central Moscow Park. The best teams representing 24 cities in Russia battled for the grand prize, a football experience trip to Italy and ultimately a team of boys from Ekaterinburg took home the grand prize.

KFC Russia sponsors the KFC Mini Football Championship, which provides young people from all over the country a chance to participate in a large football event and develop their sport skills. It aims to popularize the sport, encourage a healthy lifestyle and develop amateur sports among teenagers.

The Championship was established in 2012 with 1 city and 700 footballers participating. Over three seasons, it has grown to an international event with players from 25 cities across Russia and Kazakhstan participating in the 2015 season. Many outstanding Russian sportsmen, national football team players and Olympic Champions supported the event, and more than 100 media partners nationwide covered the season driving huge awareness of the program.

The KFC Mini-Football Championship has received numerous accolades, including being recognized as “The Best Corporate Project” by Eventiada Awards and “The Best Project Award” by Sport and Russia 2015.
