At Yum! Brands, we believe in giving back to the community, and in making a difference in the lives of our customers and their families. We support charities across the globe financially and through employee volunteerism, focusing many of our efforts on improving the lives of children. Our employees and franchisees give back to their communities every day in many ways. Here are just some of the company's philanthropic initiatives:
CHINA
KFC China and the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) established a special fund to help students in need. The KFC China First Light Foundation is a special scholarship fund designed to help Chinese students in need with their college education. The 10-year project will provide financial aid to students at approximately 40 colleges and universities in 15 cities including Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Wuhan. In addition, KFC China will provide part-time jobs for those students who wish to support themselves and learn more about the world.
UNITED KINGDOM
KFC UK has supported many community activities and charities over the years including ChildLine. ChildLine is the official charity of KFC UK. ChildLine is a free, 24-hour help-line for children and young people in the UK who are in trouble or danger. Trained volunteer counselors comfort, advise and protect children and young people who feel they have nowhere else to turn.
THAILAND
KFC and Pizza Hut Thailand established a special program to build new elementary schools and improve the lives of children in need. Since 1999, Thailand's KFC-Pizza Hut, We Do Society Right program has had education and community development as its main focus. With money collected at KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants throughout the country, the program has helped fund the construction of 10 new elementary schools since 2000. Every two years the program revisits the schools and provides additional amenities for the children such as fish ponds and recreation facilities. Through this program, KFC and Pizza Hut Thailand also provides scholarships, books, clothes, classroom tables and chairs and standard medicine packages to benefit children in need. KFC and Pizza Hut Thailand also improves the lives of local orphans by organizing fun trips to KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants and local amusement parks.
AUSTRALIA
Yum! Restaurants International (YRI) Australia has a proud history of community involvement including philanthropic initiatives. YRI Australia's two major activities are:
The Millennium Foundation raises funds in support of critical medical research at one of Australia's largest teaching hospitals and research facilities. YRI Australia is directly involved in several fundraising initiatives throughout the year that include their suppliers, franchisees, customers and employees. In 2002, YRI Australia was recognized by the Foundation for achieving a $1 million fundraising milestone in its 10-year association.
Reach is an organization targeted at reducing youth suicide by providing peer group support and teaching life skills to teenagers. Throughout the past four years, KFC Victoria has participated in several fundraising activities. KFC Victoria has utilized its people to help run and facilitate many of the specific youth orientated programs. The White Lion program, for example, provides vocational training for teenagers who have been involved with the juvenile justice system.
