Yum! is committed to making sustainability a priority and to reducing our environmental footprint for the benefit of our customers, associates, franchisees, families, shareholders and the planet. At its core, sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. In support of this commitment, we are publishing our sustainable sourcing and waste recovery policies. They promote sustainable forest management and smarter material use for the benefit of our communities and the planet.

Sustainable Sourcing & Waste Recovery Policies:

  1. Yum! is moving toward Sustainable Sourcing by ensuring that paper and paper-based packaging products we buy do not knowingly come from illegal or other unwanted fiber sources.

As part of our commitment to responsible sourcing, Yum! is committed to engaging with our suppliers and gathering data on all paper and packaging sourcing to assess our current state, which will allow us to establish targets to achieve these commitments.

Examples of Unwanted Fiber Sources include:

    • Wood harvested in a manner that violates human rights and local or international laws
    • Wood harvested in locations that have been identified to have high conservation values
    • Wood harvested from forests that have been converted to plantations for non-forest use

In addition, we will give preference to suppliers who source wood fiber, certified by a third-party, which meets the most rigorous forest management standards.

We will work with all suppliers to progressively increase the proportion of certified material as larger quantities become available. We will also accept paper and packaging certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and national certification systems that are endorsed by the Program for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), such as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).

  2. Yum! is committed to Sustainable Packaging by increasing the amount of recycled content, as permitted by regulatory and technical constraints, across our global system.

  3. Yum! is committed to implementing projects to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle our food and packaging waste. This includes food recovery, diverting waste from landfills, and packaging reclamation programs.
