If you’re an old school Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan, you remember clearly the gang’s pie-launching weapon on wheels, the Pizza Thrower.
But what you likely never imagined was a real-life, fully-functioning Thrower, capable of hurling full-size pizzas up to 30 feet. Lucky for all of us, Pizza Hut US did imagine it—and then created it.
Teaming with Paramount Pictures, the brand brought the machine to life for a big reveal to fans at this week’s Comic-Con festival in San Diego. It’s the most recent element of an engagement campaign leading up to the August 8 premiere of the new TMNT movie.
“Building the Pizza Thrower as part of our partnership with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film is one of the coolest things we’ve seen in a while,” said Jared Drinkwater, Senior Director of Marketing, Pizza Hut US. “There’s no better place to bring technology of this scale to life than at Comic-Con. We know that convention goers are going to love taking down Shredder, sampling Cheesy Bites Pizza and will have a lot of fun with both of our brands throughout the convention.”
The Pizza Thrower was constructed by Syyn Labs, a Los Angeles organization of technology, engineering and robotics gurus who used a pick-up truck chassis as the project’s starting point. Check out some of the specs and features of the end result:
- Dimensions: 12 feet tall; 9 feet wide; 16 feet long
- Weight: Approximately two tons
- Materials: Molded box steel tube, fiberglass-reinforced plywood
- Vehicle Speed: 5-10 mph while shooting; up to 75 mph in non-launch mode
- Thrower Speed: 20 feet per second
- Thrower Distance: 30 feet
