Yum! Brands Celebrates 20 Years in Business http://www.yum.com/yum-brands-celebrates-20-years-in-business/ http://www.yum.com/yum-brands-celebrates-20-years-in-business/#respond Wed, 11 Oct 2017 20:12:47 +0000 http://www.yum.com/?p=5563 ... Read more »]]> Here at Yum! Brands, we’re celebrating our 20th anniversary as a publicly traded NYSE company. What started as a subsidiary of PepsiCo has grown into a company whose three iconic global restaurant brands—KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell—lead the chicken, pizza and Mexican categories worldwide. We’re very proud of that and couldn’t have done it without all of our people.

We also take pride in the fact that we boast nearly 44,000 locations in over 135 countries. This expansion harks back to our mission. We come to work every day with one purpose—to create a world with more Yum!—which means we’ll take a moment to stop and reflect on our two-decade milestone, but will quickly refocus on building the world’s most loved, trusted and fastest growing restaurant brands.

It’s true that we’ve helped to transform the QSR industry over our history. Just two years prior to our 1997 founding, Pizza Hut reinvented the way we think about crust by introducing Stuffed Crust, a pizza positioned to actually be eaten backwards, crust first, and a phenomenon that has stretched all over the world.

And Taco Bell’s Doritos Locos Taco still remains one of the top breakthrough innovations in fast food. In 2012, we introduced the crunchy Doritos chip as a hard taco shell. Consumers loved the Taco Bell and Doritos mash-up so much that they bought more than 1 billion of the Doritos Locos Taco in just three years.

KFC, our heritage brand, has managed to look 65 years young by introducing new, southern-inspired regional offerings like the now famous Nashville Hot and Georgia Gold recipes. Plus, there was that time we made sunscreen that smells like our Extra Crispy fried chicken.

But we’re also set to succeed going forward. KFC is a global powerhouse that has nearly 21,000 restaurants worldwide. Pizza Hut is making is easier to get a better pizza with nearly 16,500 restaurants. And Taco Bell is a culture-centric, lifestyle brand with more than 6,500 restaurants and a huge opportunity for international expansion.

And we’ll maintain this growth by transforming to an at least 98 percent franchised model by the end of 2018.

Looking back, we’ve done a lot right, and we’ll continue to do so thanks to our unrivaled culture and talent. Together, with our leadership, employees and franchisees, we’ll create a world with more Yum!.

Here’s to the next 20 years – the best is yet to come!

How to Build Unrivaled Culture and Talent: Know What Millennials Want http://www.yum.com/how-to-build-unrivaled-culture-and-talent-know-what-millennials-want/ http://www.yum.com/how-to-build-unrivaled-culture-and-talent-know-what-millennials-want/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2017 20:15:55 +0000 http://www.yum.com/?p=5541 ... Read more »]]> Millennials are shaping new ideas about the employer/employee relationship. According to a study by ManpowerGroup, this generation will comprise more than one-third of the global workforce by 2020, so it’s important for organizations to understand the needs of this evolving employee base.

As Yum! continues to build unrivaled culture and talent, we know it’s essential to continuously assess the way we invest in our people. This ensures we’re attracting, retaining and engaging top talent—current and future.

To help uncover key millennial insights, Yum! HR leaders facilitated a panel discussion during Grow Yourself Week. In it, millennial employees provided perspective about what they were looking for in their careers. Throughout the session, a few key themes emerged among our panelists:

  • Millennials are motivated by challenges in their careers.
Millennials prefer an environment that is constantly evolving, and they are eager to pursue opportunities that will allow them to stretch themselves and learn new skills. They like to play an active role in their professional and personal development.
  • Millennials want flexibility and balance.
“Work to live” is the motto of millennials. They prefer to work smarter, not harder, and find ways to balance their careers with their lives outside of work. They believe that when they feel fulfilled in their personal lives, they are able to bring the best versions of themselves to work.
  • Millennials value personal relationships in the workplace.
Millennials appreciate when a team member or a coach takes interest in their lives outside of work. They focus on building authentic relationships at work, which makes collaboration and team projects more fulfilling.
  • Millennials prefer experiences over things.
Experiences like traveling the world, investing in a new skill or hobby, or attending cultural events are more important to millennials than material things. They prefer to put their money toward opportunities that they feel will allow them to grow themselves.
  • Millennials want meaningful work.
Millennials want to make an impact on the world, no matter how small. They desire work that they are passionate about and aligns with their personal values. They value transparency from their organization and appreciate a clearly delineated mission and vision.

Yum!’s unwavering commitment to creating a culture where everyone counts and can truly grow is part of our mission to build the most loved, trusted and fastest-growing restaurant company in the world.

Yum!’s Holistic Approach to Employee Well-Being http://www.yum.com/yums-holistic-approach-to-employee-well-being/ http://www.yum.com/yums-holistic-approach-to-employee-well-being/#respond Wed, 20 Sep 2017 20:29:35 +0000 http://www.yum.com/?p=5523 ... Read more »]]> At Yum!, we encourage a holistic approach to employee well-being by offering experiences and programs that go beyond the scope of physical wellness. We believe in providing opportunities that nurture the minds, bodies and spirits of our people.

Employee development strategies that include physical, mental, social and financial aspects of well-being yield an all-inclusive method toward meeting the needs of employees.  According to Gallup’s most recent iteration of the State of the American Workplace, more than half of employees report better overall well-being as “very important” to them.  In the same survey, work-life balance and overall well-being were determined to be the second most important factor when choosing to work for an organization. When employees are fulfilled in all aspects of their well-being, it boosts employee engagement and increases individual performance.

As part of our Grow Yourself Week initiative, we are offering a range of development sessions for employees to explore different aspects of their personal well-being.

  • For fitness buffs: From a barre, yoga and pilates sampler to cardio bootcamp, there are several fitness classes throughout the week for employees to work up a sweat.
  • For self-reflectors: Employees can grow themselves with a Myers-Briggs personality test and workshop, or attend a session on Cultivating Confidence to learn how to silence the inner critic and let their strengths shine.
  • For go-getters: Courses like Project Management Kick Start and Networking with Confidence give employees the chance to hone these practical and professional skills that will help accelerate career growth.
  • For socializers: With Accelerating Your Growth by Getting Involved in the Community, employees can learn how volunteering and getting involved with non-profit boards can contribute to personal and professional growth, and feel good about making a difference with causes they care about.

The opportunities offered during Grow Yourself Week are only a few examples of Yum!’s broader approach to employee well-being. Learn more about how Yum! makes employee development a priority and see if a career at Yum! is right for you.

Since the BOOK IT! Program’s inception in 1984, its mission has been simple: encourage children to read.

The program, which runs from October through March, allows teachers to set reading goals for their students each month. Students who meet their monthly goal are rewarded with a certificate for a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza and Reading Journal from Pizza Hut. The program prides itself on being simple, flexible and fun. Best of all, enrollment in the BOOK IT! Program is free.

BOOK IT! is entering its second year partnering with award-winning children’s author Kate DiCamillo.   DiCamillo uses her platform as a world-renowned writer to encourage children to find the joy in reading.

“Kate embodies the same passion for reading that is palpable across every level of the BOOK IT! It is a day to reflect on what we have done and what we can continue to do to make the world a better place.

This year, in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day, KFC South Africa is hosting its One ‘Can’ Make a Difference event on its corporate campus. Employees will have the opportunity to participate in a can-struction activity, where donated canned goods will be made into an art installation before being packed up and distributed to Add Hope beneficiaries in order to feed those in need.

KFC South Africa’s goal is to reach 670 cans and pack them for distribution in under 67 minutes—a tribute to Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of service when the holiday was established.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation encourages global citizens to take action—no matter how big or small—and live every day as Nelson Mandela Day.
