Chief Public Affairs Officer Jonathan Blum Shares Yum!’s Journey to Become the Defining Global Company that Feeds the World
March 12, 2015
At Yum! Brands, we are a company with a Huge Heart and we believe our greatest contribution as a global company is in making food accessible to the less fortunate. We invest in giving back to the communities in which we work and live, making a positive difference in the lives of our customers, associates, franchisees and their families.
We recently announced the impact of our 2014 World Hunger Relief and Volunteer for Hope campaigns. Jonathan Blum, Yum! Brands Chief Public Affairs and Global Nutrition Officer, shares more on how we are delivering on our commitment to become the Defining Global Company that Feeds the World.
World Hunger Relief
“We believe that we must leave this world better than we found it. As one of the world’s largest restaurant companies, it is Yum!’s responsibility and privilege to do everything we can to make a difference in the fight against hunger and help others less fortunate. As a result, we created a global hunger relief initiative, in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and other hunger agencies, to help the 805 million people on the planet who are impoverished and at risk of starvation. Since its inception in 2007, we are very pleased to have raised and donated more than $600 million in cash and food donations providing 2.4 billion nutritious meals for those in need. Our employees and franchisees have volunteered millions of hours of their time toward this cause, and we have created massive awareness for the WFP with Christina Aguilera as our global ambassador. While we are proud of our accomplishments, we recognize we have much more to do to help solve this global problem.”
Volunteer for Hope
“As we approached our 15th anniversary in 2012, we launched our global Volunteer for Hope program. The program – which Yum! Chief People Officer, Anne Byerlein and I co-chair – empowers our 1.5 million associates to give back to the communities in which they work and live through volunteerism. The Volunteer for Hope program, now in its third year, has awarded more than 160 grants and nearly $500,000 to charitable organizations around the world. We’re extremely proud how Volunteer for Hope provides associates the ability to make a lasting impact in the lives of their partner charities and in their local communities.”
“For more than 20 years, Yum!, KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell have been committed to solving hunger in the U.S. through our Harvest food donation program. Through Harvest, our restaurants donate more than 10 million pounds of food annually to partner agencies nationwide. It’s inspiring that since 1992, Harvest has grown into the world’s largest prepared food donation program, contributing 173 million pounds of food to over 3,000 nonprofit organizations in the U.S. We’re also excited to continue expanding Harvest globally this year.”
Local Community Engagement
“Since our Company was founded in 1997, the Yum! Foundation has donated nearly $45 million to more than 100 non-profits in our hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. In the U.S., our Brands also give back with outstanding programs that focus on college scholarships through the KFC Foundation , reading incentives through the Pizza Hut BOOK IT!® program and mentoring at-risk teens through the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens. We give back to the communities in which we operate globally through local partnerships, sponsorships and cause-related marketing efforts and our 1.5 million associates and franchisees give back to their local communities every day.”
